Background:
The first “International symposium on Soil Erosion and Dry-land Farming” was held in September of 1997. More than 150 participants from 28 countries attended this meeting. Participants shared experiences, accomplishments, and problem issues in soil erosion management and dry-land farming. With increasing concerns of the effects of global climate change on food and fiber production, new questions and challenges have arisen concerning our ability to sustain our limited land and water resources. In recent years, prolonged drought and frequent flooding have been attributed to global climate change and the deterioration of the environment. On the Chinese Loess Plateau, for example, a sustainable agriculture is being challenged by limited water resources, severe erosion and drought.  How to balance and harmonize economic development and environmental protection in resource-limited areas is becoming a world-wide concern. Whether current conservation practices and farming techniques can provide food security under increasing population, diminishing resources and climate instability needs to be addressed. This symposium provides an opportunity for scientists world wide to share their experiences, progress made, and achievements in soil erosion/conservation and dry-land farming. Specifically, the Symposium will address the following.
Themes:
    Soil erosion processes, assessment, and control
    Mechanism and techniques of ecological rehabilitation
    Sustainable soil and water resource management in semi-arid areas.
    Improved water use efficiency in dry-land farming systems.
    Impacts of global climate change on soil erosion and dry-land farming
    New technologies in soil conservation and dry-land agriculture.
