Introduction
Soil genesis, as an essential part of pedology, is a classical branch of soil science. Numerous knowledge has been generated from pedogenesis studies and based on which, our understanding of soil system in space and time has evolved continuously. However, classical studies in soil science such as pedogensis have faced challenges as more environment-oriented problem-solving applied researches raised by modern society dominate the current soil related studies. The sector of soil genesis and classification has been kept in a low profile for the last decade.
However, new theories and technologies, emerging interdisciplinary aspects esp. on global change, interactive aspect of the relationship between soil and human beings, etc., has brought up new opportunities in pedogenesis study, especially for a higher time and spatial resolution and in a more quantitative way. New fields such as environmental pedology, eco-pedology and environmental modeling are becoming increasingly attractive.
Soil classification is a prerequisite of soil resource inventory but until now there is not yet a globally practiced system. Although Soil Taxonomy, World Reference Base for Soil Resources and national soil classification systems such as Chinese Soil Taxonomy are keeping moving, new ideas shifting from Boolean to fuzzy logistics in recognizing and organizing soils have emerged and are being increasingly tested in different parts of the world.
This workshop will provide such a forum for the above-mentioned topics.
Workshop scope
Soil genesis in extreme (cold, warm, arid, wet) environments
Anthropedogenesis and soil change in human domain
Paleosols and records of past environmental change
New indicators for the characterization of soil genetic properties and processes
Environmental pedology and eco-pedology
